SIR – Re D S Boyes letter (T&A, May 8). Bang on, Mr Boyes, people do have short memories.

I remember the 1992 General Election and what happened after, with Black Wednesday, when the Prime Minister and chancellor had to go to the IMF with cap in hand to bail out a bankrupt country, after years of economic failure.

Like Mr Boyes, I am old enough to remember, that Major and Lamont were Tories, and it was the culmination of Thatcher and Major policies over a 12-year period that bankrupted a nation.
