SIR – A year ago, I pointed out the fact that Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors voted for a 9.5 per cent increase to the Fire Authority precept which is paid for by local taxpayers.
I suggested this decision was taken for political rather than economic reasons (given there were no local elections last year). Surprise, surprise, having recently received my Council Tax bill for this year (a local election year), the amount I pay for the Fire Authority is the same as last year.
Somewhat bizarrely, I was accused at the time of “attempting to score short-term political advantage” – I think readers can make up their own minds on who is guilty of that.
