SIR – Concerns about the cost of nuclear waste are understandable (David Hornsby, Letters, February 24), but new power stations produce much less waste than the old Magnox stations which account for a disproportionate share of the waste.

However, new nuclear powers stations produce an enormous amount of electricity – Hinckley Point will provide seven per cent of our electricity and a small amount of the electricity cost will cover the waste problem.

The cost of waste treatment has always been provided for in electricity bills, but the Government did not set up a fund from this income to cover waste disposal, it just went into the Government coffers!

Sellafield may or may not be the most hazardous nuclear site in the world, but they are all safe. I have been to Sellafield a few times and I have no concerns.
