SIR – I never thought I could find myself agreeing with with Mr Bird, (Letters, February 15), but never say never!
Perhaps the main reason is that at the moment, a trade deal is being secretly negotiated between the EU and the USA.
The basic aim of the deal is to give the corporatists (American banks and big business) more power than our politicians.
For example, if a future EU member state (let us say a future UK government) decides it doesn’t like elements of this deal a few years from now, they can do little to reverse the process without being sued by the corporatists for loss of business. The matter will then be decided, not by a UK or European court, but by a panel of (US) business lawyers.
In essence, the EU are transferring member countries’ rights to American corporations which, when agreed, will be pretty much irreversible. So when the Tories sell off the NHS to American health insurance companies (and they will) it will be forever!
This is the culmination of a 40-year plan for US fundamentalist capitalism (planned misery for the 99 per cent) to dominate the world. The endgame is to make that domination irreversible.
