SIR – Once again we have Alex Salmond grandstanding on behalf of the Scottish Nationalists – a man solely out for his own self-aggrandisement at the expense of the Scottish people where indeed his party has only an overall slender majority.

It is not in his power if he wins independence to retain the pound or remain in Europe.

What further sticks in the craw is his “Eton toff” accusations at the Government. The three main parties at Westminster are all in agreement. Further, it would be in David Cameron’s interest politically to support independence since that would ensure a permanent Tory government at Westminster.

To call him unprincipled is a scandal and if the Scots fall for Salmond’s rhetoric thenthey will end in the slough of despond.
