SIR – Re Sparks fly over electric car charger for Baildon (T&A February 3). Adverse comments on the £3,500 costs highlight this expense, alternative needs and the fact that there are only seven electric cars registered in the Bradford area.
I wish to point out the wider perspective puts these views in a different light. Firstly, the number of battery-operated electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid models are forecast to increase considerably during 2014 and there are very few charging points in Bradford. Throughout the country the number is growing rapidly (5,276 at present). They will bring benefits to the whole community.
Even more important is the value of electric vehicles to the environment. Road transport is the largest single source of nitrogen-dioxide pollution with critical pollution pockets in particular responsible for much illness and many deaths.
Finally, there is the question of climate change. A recent survey shows only a fifth (approximately) of the population is “unconvinced” about the reality and some 39 per cent are motivated by the idea of Britain taking a leading role internationally, even if it means some personal sacrifices.
Climate scientists point out energy-related CO2 emissions are at historic highs and emission trends are in line with a temperature increase of 6C, which would have devastating consequences.
