SIR – I have just received a booklet from the Department for Communities and Local Government titled 50 Ways To Save, detailing lots of ways for councils like Bradford to economise, which if adopted might go a long way to maintaining services under threat and at the same time staving off a planned rise in council tax.
I believe it is incumbent on all council leaders to disclose to their electorate exactly how many of these suggested savings have been made and how many ignored.
Although I would be the first to agree that not every one is practical for every local authority, many of them, eg, stopping paying council staff as union officials or ending pension provision for councillors, etc, are valid and could even result in council tax being reduced if properly implemented.
