SIR – Given their party name – “Liberal Democrats”, why have Liberal Democrat MPs and Peers not supported the idea of letting the British people have a vote in a referendum on Britain’s future relationship with the European Union?
Could it be that as the most pro-European of the main parties the result would not be to their liking? The North American Free Trade Area – Canada, Mexico and the USA – clearly demonstrates that you can have the advantages of free trade without the loss of national sovereignty that an ever-closer political union envisaged by many EU leaders would result in.
