SIR – It is rare to find oneself in agreement with policy decisions of Bradford Council, but, in refusing to back the profligate waste of the HS2 ‘big train-set’, our Council has got it right this time.

Setting aside the lack of benefits to Bradford itself, this project is an outrageous waste of scarce resources, yet would deliver no real advantages to anyone other than a small clique of expense-account travellers and a host of greedy construction companies, while permanently desecrating the landscape for millions.

With the continuing growth of electronic communications, the need to shift flesh from one place to another has become as historic as the 19th century iron-horse technology it proposes, any truly necessary business interfaces already being achievable instantly online.

It is almost as if the Government looks to the future through a rear-view mirror: never the smartest way to drive forward. So well done, Bradford Council, for this rare outbreak of common sense.
