SIR – It is perfectly sensible, and understandable, that the company moving on to Buck Lane should wish to minimise their costs by erecting a decidedly workaday shed (T&A, January 30).
Unfortunately, this corrugated box sets the standard for the rest of the site. The Council claimed a green field was essential as a backdrop for the promised quality architecture. We have ended up with the worst of both worlds, lost green space and ugly buildings. Buildings which could have gone on the local brown fields.
It gets worse. The Council promised Buck Lane would create 723 brand new jobs. Pro rata, this first company should provide 101, not the eventual 60 we are told to expect.
Most of these jobs aren’t even new. They belong to existing employees who will continue to live, shop and pay their council taxes elsewhere.
Bradford gains nothing except traffic. Promised jobs were the sole justification for Buck Lane. How will the Council address the shortfall?
Nobody is blaming the company for building on a site offered by the Council’s developer. The problem lies with City Hall. Once again, undeliverable promises have been made in support of an unnecessary pet project.
