SIR – Regarding the article (T&A, January 22) that the ‘Elected by popular demand, value for money’ Baildon Town Council is to spend some of the 43p per week required to be paid by every Baildon precept payer on a £3,500 a charging point for the (presently seven) electric cars in the metropolitan district.

The city Council is apparently, in these days of austerity, while proposing to close the Baildon public toilets, also donating more than £10,000 towards the project, meaning that those electric-powered motorised tourists who, albeit that they might increase in the future, would have nowhere convenient to ‘spend a penny’ should they visit our proud little town!

The only good thing about this piece of news which will be no doubt welcomed by Baildonians is that it gave Messrs Lyon and Ashton an opportunity to agree about something, namely their ‘green credentials’, rather than squabbling with each other!

Surely, nearly £14,000 would go some of the way to maintaining the toilets and other more essential needs of Baildon rather than catering for a tiny minority which is not likely to increase in the very near future?
