SIR – Apart from climate change, the biggest issue facing the world right now is tackling inequality. Some governments claim it is their top priority, but still the problem grows worse and worse each year.
The charity Oxfam has just revealed the £1 trillion combined wealth of the world’s 85 richest people is equal to that of half of the world’s population. So, three and a half billion people own no more than the equivalent number who could be accommodated both seated and standing on a double decker bus!
Global leaders, such as our own PM David Cameron are soon to head for the Swiss resort of Davos for the World Economic Forum. Will anyone there at all acknowledge that it is their wealth that leaves millions of others living miserable lives in poverty? And more importantly, apart from talking, is anyone prepared to actually start to do anything about it?
