SIR – It’s amusing to see Cameron and Osborne telling the EU to ‘reform or Britain will be out !’ Tough talk indeed, but what does it all mean?

I would guess that trying to out-UKIP UKIP is one reason. It seems likely that Cameron expects quite a number of his right-wing voters (which, frankly, is most of them) to drift towards the UKIP position.

Or, is he perhaps waking up to the fact that many Britons are fed up with the open-door policy to EU migrants? Unlikely.

Is he fed up with the EU mandatory regulations forcing UK business to play fair with their workers? Certainly, but that alone would not be enough to promote this ultimatum position. I think the real reason Cameron is actually prepared to take Britain out of the EU is because the EU is trying to do what the coalition is singularly failing to do – which is to control his paymasters (and those who really run the country), the banks.

I predict that if the EU modify their banking regulation directive, all talk of leaving the EU will evaporate (after the next election of course) Meanwhile, the Europhile Lib-Dems are, curiously, saying nothing.
