SIR – The letter from Alison Sherratt of the ATL (January 11) simply adds to the unseemly spat between Michael Gove, teachers and so-called leftie historians which is currently demeaning plans to commemorate the Great War.
Party political arguments about the rights and wrongs of the war aims and what to teach younger generations about its conduct and the competence of the generals are for another time.
Gove, Sherratt and the rest should be ashamed of themselves. They should stop their bickering now and instead remember only and with humility and gratitude the unbelievable bravery of those who, when ordered to advance, did not shoot their officers and run away, but picked up their rifles and marched towards the machine guns.
