SIR – I’m no socialist and, unlike Max Hey, (‘No job for the courts’, Letters, January 3), I don’t trust all our elected representatives. Who brought in the Poll Tax? Human rights a threat to democracy? Personally, I’d pull Parliament down tomorrow, scrapping the House of Lords and installing fair votes.
While a majority of MPs, (by no means all elected by a majority of their electorate), may have voted against giving voting rights to all prisoners, I believe that the rights of short-term prisoners were not properly considered.
Having been imprisoned for refusing to pay Poll Tax, removing my vote too would have been a real double whammy from that woman. Why punish some more than others imprisoned either side of an election by removing their right to vote? Where’s the justice in that? No job for the courts?
