SIR – So, the Westfield project is about to start. Does this mean that Bradford Council can sit back and watch the regeneration happen? Probably.
When it happens and all the new shops are open, most will have vacated other premises in the city. This will leave even more empty premises in our already desolate city centre.
What are the Council going to do to regenerate these other business premises? Probably nothing. They think that the Westfield shopping centre is the promised land.
It will actually occupy about a tenth of the city centre. Is this the extent of our ambitions for the city? Should we ignore the centre that has existed for many years?
Come on, councillors. What are you going to do to encourage other businesses to open an outlet in the city now that we have a light at the end of the tunnel? You will never get a better chance.
Small rent and rates from these premises is better than nothing. The city will not survive on the Westfield development alone.
