SIR – In response to David Shaw’s letter (T&A, December 20) about the Labour Council’s proposals to create a three-tier system for children’s centres in the Bradford district, it seems inequitable to sideline the outlying areas of the district, especially when it was recently announced that Yorkshire is to receive £83 million in Government funding to provide free childcare for two-year-olds from the poorest families.
I was also surprised to discover that a large chunk of the most deprived part of Baildon isn’t in the “reach area” of Baildon Children’s Centre (whereas part of Thackley is!). It seems that deprivation statistics can be used to fit an argument, which, considering the strength of feeling expressed at the recent public meeting in Shipley Library, doesn’t appear to be in the best interests of users of our children’s centre.
I would urge readers to have their say through Bradford Council’s consultation on children’s centres via bradford.gov.uk before January 17.
