Sir – I understand the frustration Councillor David Green must feel attempting to scale back Council spending more than ever having made so many savings already in the year to date. But this Labour-run Council’s first reaction is to close public toilets in Shipley markets and Haworth park at the bottom of Main Street, and to close day nurseries in Haworth and Keighley.
This would leave market traders, and incredibly, visitors to next year’s Tour de France event in June, without public toilets. I very much doubt these will yield Bradford any savings at all, and seem to me to be vindictive to the people of this area.
Or maybe the Labour leader of the Council is trying to provoke a reaction from Coun Glen Miller, whose seat is in Haworth. Or, as Coun Miller has alleged, he has calculated these cuts are in areas that do not often win Labour seats for City Hall, and he plans to avoid making cuts in Labour seats in Bradford.
Instead of tabling ridiculous ideas like this, would it not be better for the two leaders to sit down together and discuss other ways of adapting to the incredible strains placed on local services?
