SIR – I am utterly appalled by the announced pay increase for our Members of Parliament. It’s a disgrace. Perhaps though it could be a rightful benchmark for pay increases for pensioners, public sector workers, plumbers and professors.
If parliamentarians accept this inflation-busting deal they are little better than the English Ashes team. Spineless parliament must throw out this outrageous award. An independent review body including trade union leaders, leaders from the business world and others is necessary with recommended awards to apply to all regardless of place, profession or position.
Visiting regularly all parts of Leeds and North Yorkshire, I find widespread disenchantment with politicians of all parties and with Westminster. It’s a very dangerous situation when people talk of not bothering to vote. We are all in it together, politicians and public.
