SIR – I refer to Paul Latham’s letter (T&A, December 10) concerning the housing market and thought it might be helpful to correct a number of inaccuracies in his remarks.
Firstly, Mark Carney has made no recommendations to the Chancellor on the future of Help to Buy, although as Governor of Bank of England he is free to do so.
Secondly, far from “abandoning” this successful scheme, Help to Buy is helping thousands of aspiring homeowners to get on the housing ladder. In fact, in the first week of the Mortgage Guarantee launching, RBS received 10,000 enquiries. On top of this, more than 170 households are being helped to buy a newly-built home in Bradford district through the Help to Buy: Equity Loan.
Because these schemes are available on newly-built homes, developers have said they will build more as a direct result of this increased demand, with house-building in Bradford up 50 per cent compared to last year.
I trust this clarifies the position.
