SIR – The news that Business Minister Michael Fallon is minded to block democratically-elected county councillors in Cumbria, who vetoed a £12 billion nuclear-waste dump in their area of Cumbria, is, I believe, very worrying.
An eventual decision to impose a toxic nuclear dump buried under the ground in that location would surely undermine democracy.
It was clear months ago, when the decision was made to build a new nuclear power station, that the government sought to avoid the question as to 'where is the toxic waste to go?' And this is the question that always goes hand in hand with nuclear power. Sadly, this Government’s commitment to 'fracking' made even earlier this year as well as nuclear, rather than standing four-square behind renewables, means this kind of story could be be repeated elsewhere in other geographical areas.
Perhaps it could be a lot closer than we think, for Mr Fallon also hinted that the government may impose a nuclear dump on any site it deems suitable.
