SIR – I am one of the Tong and Fulneck Valley Association campaigners mentioned in your report (T&A, December 6) re Bradford Council’s proposals to release green belt protection at Tong Valley and Westgate Hill. These proposals also affect Tyersal, Sutton, Dudley Hill, Fulneck, Pudsey, Birkenshaw and Kirklees.

The area under threat is natural, beautiful countryside which Bradford Council always wanted to maintain as a “green corridor” between Bradford and Leeds. The area should be preserved for our children and future generations – they won’t thank us for concreting over it.

I know there is a demand for houses, but this is not a suitable or practical solution.

Having followed your “Save Our Green Spaces” campaign, I concur that we should be using “brownfield sites” first, as well as sites that already have planning permission but are being “land banked” by developers.

The infrastructure in the area is not able to cope with existing traffic as it is. Any incident on the M62 means closure and traffic diverted to Gildersome roundabout to follow the A650, leading to gridlock at Westgate Hill, Tong Cemetery and Tong Street.

I can assure your readers it is not a case of Nimby, but of a genuine care for the area surrounding Tong village.
