SIR – Alan Holdsworth trots out Labour’s excuse for the last Labour government in “Too many casualties”, (Letters, December 7). Labour may not have been the direct cause of the global financial meltdown despite London being one of the world’s major financial centres.

Who else has forgotten the necessity of bailing out some of our major banks? As a minimum, Labour were guilty of insisting on not regulating our financial institutions properly.

While not the main cause of the meltdown, it surely was a sizeable contributory factor. Labour will no doubt fool some of the people, especially those who, like Mr Holdsworth, will not see.
