SIR – In response to Labour Council leader David Green’s further letter attacking me (T&A, December 6) I stand corrected on the amount Bradford Council wastes on full- time Union officials – a “mere” £250,000, not the £500,000 often quoted.
Instead of whinging about how hard done by Bradford is, maybe Coun Green should consider why savings are having to be made across the country – could it be due to the profligacy of the previous Labour government?
I suggest he concentrates on spending the Government grant and council tax payers’ money wisely on essential services and saves money on Labour gimmicks like elaborate city centre events (how about getting private sponsorship for these?), the disastrous CCTV car and a ‘Good Food Award’ for takeaways (oh, and not forgetting the £250,000 on union officials).
He might also want to recover some of the £27 million owed in council tax – maybe then he could find the £8,000 per year needed to keep Baildon’s public toilets open.
Coun Debbie Davies (Conservative, Baildon ward), Hartlington Court, Baildon
