SIR – Can the suggestion that the National Media Museum is planning to sell off its in-house cinemas be true?
Bradford is the City of Film, and the museum, with its wide range of independent films, prestigious film festivals and excellent film courses, is a truly fantastic resource for the city.
Yes, it’s been plagued by inadequate marketing – what other cinema doesn’t even have a sign outside stating that it is a cinema? And its management seem totally focused on museum issues rather than films. No wonder audiences are sometimes small and the kind of chaos described by Gareth Nolan (Letters, November 27) is familiar to those of us who attend film showings regularly.
However, the loss of the cinemas would be a blow for the city and its many fans of independent cinema who turn up week after week, unlike occasional museum-goers.
I attended a “consultation” event five weeks ago at which the director spoke for almost an hour, barely touching on the film side of the museum – and certainly not mentioning this planned sell-off, although it must have been well under way by then.
Why is it all being done behind closed doors? Don’t the members, and other supporters, deserve a say in the cinemas’ future?
