SIR – What makes the fact that only one in seven convicted burglars is jailed (‘Shipley MP demands tougher court sentences’, December 6) even worse is that the detection rate for burglaries in Shipley and Baildon is only six per cent.
Therefore, if by chance you are caught then you have probably committed other offences in the past that you have got away with.
Anyone who has experienced a burglary will know how distressing it is to lose items of sentimental value that are irreplaceable.
It is time our new Police and Crime Commissioner makes improving the detection rates a priority and that the courts impose stricter sentences on those who are caught.
