SIR – Far from being rattled by Coun Davies’ half-baked assessment of different rates of Government cuts in different parts of the country (Letters, December 5), I am concerned that the debate should reflect the facts not Tory spin.
My supposedly “dodgy” figures come from her Government – the Local Government Finance Settlement 2011-13, the related House of Commons Library report, the Index of Multiple Deprivation and 2010 population figures.
If she bothered looking properly she would find that these official sources demonstrate Bradford’s funding has reduced by over twice the percentage and rate per person than the average for the wealthiest areas.
Coun Davies also gets her figures on Council Trade Unions wrong by well over 50 per cent in another attempt to mislead people who must be wondering why she persistently tries to pull the wool over their eyes.
There is growing recognition that patterns of public spending disproportionately favour parts of the South and Scotland over Northern England.
At Tuesday’s Council meeting I will table a motion asking all Parties to support Labour’s calls for the best possible funding deal for our local services. Local people across the District will expect Conservative Councillors to back the interests of Bradford not Berkshire. We shall see.
Coun David Green, Leader of Bradford Council, c/o City Hall, Bradford
