SIR – A local group – Bradford World Development Movement Group – organised a challenging film night at the Delius Centre recently (pictured above). In the first film, people who lived in the centre of London demonstrated how they were able to grow some of their own food and sell the surplus of it in local farmers’ markets. People together were successfully planting and harvesting their own vegetables and fruit and ordinary persons were encouraged to grow produce in public spaces.
In other parts of the world such as South Africa, California, Latin America local people were using a variety of methods to produce their own food sustainably(permaculture) as well as conserving their own seeds for the future and encouraging others to do likewise.
Six short films were shown on the topic of Food Sovereignty, followed by a lively discussion on what we could do in Bradford. Mention was made of Todmorden, where there is fruit and vegetable growing in public areas and also the Horton Community Farm in Horton Park in Bradford.
