SIR – As I approach my tenth year in elected politics, I have always done my best to try and help people who are not getting a fair deal, unheard and often exploited for their own lack of knowledge.

I have known Keith Peat of the Driver’s Union and followed his work in road safety for several years and he has convinced me that the most oppressed group in the UK are our 30 million motorists.

Regularly coerced and exploited by profiteers at the expense of road safety – often unconstitutionally – while using charities with no expertise in road safety to pave the way for their activities. Using emotional presentation, the ‘charities’ are often limited companies with well-paid executives.

I do not believe that the interests of road safety and of the UK’s beleaguered drivers can be best served unless we focus on genuine non-profit road safety.

I would prefer to see the savings diverted to a better NHS, better-staffed emergency services and A&E where more lives can be saved as well as on our roads.

I intend to work for an evidence-based, not-for-profit, road safety campaign so long overdue. I have accepted the Driver’s Union offer to become an executive patron.
