SIR – Sally Clifford’s article on women bishops (T&A, November 25) was well-written and the comments of the Reverend Ruth Yeomans were fair enough.

The thrust was, however, from the point of view that to attain women bishops was the only desirable outcome. Those unable to receive it are so often, perhaps not intentionally, but by implication, seen in a negative light by the press generally.

So may I say that those who in all integrity have, up to now, opposed this measure stand with the majority of Christians throughout the world, Catholic and Orthodox. Anglicanism is relatively tiny and they do not want to see Anglicans further distanced from the source from which they sprang historically.

Finally, it may be said the whole church is in a state of discernment on this matter. It seems to me the Synod has agreed that reasonably the most recent package provides a way forward. That is why the Catholic group voted with the proponents. As the Bishop of Bradford said in your article: “This is the first stage of a new approach.”
