SIR – I understand Gerry Sutcliffe’s and David Ward’s concerns about the abuse of older people in care homes (T&A, November 25), and would want to assure them and your readers that there is no complacency from the Council or the Safeguarding Adults Board.
The board brings together people with experience of using services, the Council, West Yorkshire Police, the NHS and the voluntary sector, to make sure everyone works together to prevent abuse and respond well when it happens.
In recent months it has run a successful Safeguarding Week to highlight good work done across the district and agreed to a new set of procedures which all agencies across West Yorkshire must follow.
It is encouraging that more people are reporting adult abuse so that action can be taken.
Every incident of abuse or neglect is one too many. If any of your readers are worried about the safety of care in a care home or a home care agency, or are concerned that an elderly neighbour or relative might be experiencing abuse, they can contact the Adult Protection Unit on (01274) 431077 or go to bradford.gov.uk/makeanalert. Staff are on hand to respond to your concern.
Jonathan Phillips, Independent Chairman, Bradford Safeguarding Adults Board
