SIR – Couns Alan Wainwright and Michael Johnson (T&A, November 20) are mistaken in asserting that people in Tong Ward are in favour of losing the amount of greenbelt land for housing that is being proposed.

Both consultation processes showed conclusively that local people are against further large-scale development, and are opposed to the loss of greenbelt land for this purpose, despite ‘sweeteners’ to try and seduce them.

A total of 1,800 new homes will cut across the countryside and deep into Raikes Lane and Tong Valley. Coun Wainwright’s assertion that the Tong Valley will be unaffected is inaccurate and misleading.

The Tong Fulneck Valley Association is opposing these developments, but is not against the building of 900 homes in suitable locations within or close to Holme Wood.

The latest proposals include an overall reduction of 3,400 homes, but in Airedale and Wharfedale, where local councillors have actively sought a reduction to their planned allocation.

It is deeply disappointing that in Tong, where the proposals are the most disproportionate in the district, our councillors are supporting the loss of greenbelt rather than opposing it.

Nevertheless our campaign continues. Join us at savetongvalley.org.uk. All is not yet lost!
