SIR – Your readers may have seen the news that efforts are being made to bring to justice 13 of the UK’s most wanted criminals thought to be hiding in Spain.
This is to be welcomed, not just because it shows the value of working with our European colleagues, but also because it demonstrates that those who break the law should not think they can escape justice by fleeing abroad.
Of course, what makes this co-operation possible is the European Arrest Warrant. While not perfect, it is a vital tool in tackling crime across borders. Where once criminals thought they could evade British justice by flying to the continent, now, thanks to the European Arrest Warrant, there’s no escape for criminals on the run in Europe.
It is shocking then that the Conservatives wanted to ditch this vital tool, which the police want to retain. Lib-Dems helped stop this move and have ensured criminals can’t escape justice simply by crossing the channel.
