While many people who suffer from diabetes do manage it well, the condition can be something of a silent killer, with thousands unaware that they might actually have it.

According to latest figures, there might be more than 1,600 undiagnosed diabetics in the Bradford city area alone. And what is more worrying is that many, many more people are – due to their lifestyles – at risk of developing the illness, a further 45,000 people in the area.

Those who have already been diagnosed will testify that managing the condition is something they quickly get used to and do well. But it is vitally important that it is detected as early as possible.

If diabetes goes unchecked, it can lead to a whole host of other, potentially more serious illnesses. Diabetics are five times more likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease or have a stroke and can be more prone to kidney problems and even blindness.

Bradford has a higher prevalence of diabetes than comparable areas and much of this is due to lifestyle. It is vital that those who are classed as “at risk” make changes to their lives now and begin to live healthier lifestyles.

In a bid to encourage those who may fall into this category to come forward, a new campaign from Bradford City Clinical Commissioning Group aims to target them through local GP practices.

Anyone who might be borderline diabetic or even undiagnosed with the full condition must take up any offer of help.

This is not something that will go away by ignoring it, and this concerted effort in Bradford can save lives, if those at risk play their part.
