SIR – Regarding the letter from Reverend Joy Gartside (T&A, November 2), I too have concerns about the huge impact the cuts will make to home service users.
I have been involved over a long period of time with the circumstances that isolation and loneliness has on people’s lives. These issues can effect health, leading to both mental and physical problems.
Last week I visited a home service user who relies on this service and did not appreciate she could be losing this lifeline support. When told she was quite genuinely upset.
The other case study I heard about was a blind lady, who relies on this service a great deal. She is unable to watch television and receives talking books and that is her lifeline.
Also, the visit the lady who delivers the books makes is one contact for conversation and company that means so much to her even if it only takes place every three weeks. This lady was heartbroken and felt her world was once more being taken away from her.
I do appreciate there has to be cuts, and where? That is very difficult.
Could the amount of money these cuts will save compensate for the rejection, loneliness and solitude these people are being asked to cope with? I do not think so. Please help and give support.
