SIR – Mike Pollard (Letters, October 21) is puzzled about comments in letters by Mr Hindle, but I too am puzzled at the selective memory of him and his ilk.
I am also old enough to remember the Thatcher years, so permit me to quote some facts from 1990: 1 Mrs Thatcher resigned as PM after 11½ years in office, 2 Inflation was 9.5 per cent.
3 The bank interest rate was almost 14 per cent (possibly curtailing the business investment to which his letter refers).
4 Manufacturing output had suffered its biggest drop since 1982 and bankruptcies were growing.
5 She privatised council housing saying that it gave everyone a chance to own a bit of the UK. Today a significant number of these houses have simply transferred to private landlords, leading to a running down of the areas.
She was determined to carry on until her closest advisers told her the end had come. She was in effect removed from office kicking and screaming by her own MPs, a fact that messrs Cameron and co appear to have deleted from history.
