It seems that the MP for Bradford West, George Galloway, might not be giving quite the signals to his constituents that people might expect.
Although there is no doubt he is a high-profile MP, it isn’t necessarily for reasons pertaining to his role as the representative for this large area of Bradford.
All his recent talk of the “tedium” of day-to-day Parliamentary business, coupled with his apparent ambitions towards the role of elected Mayor of London, perhaps give the impression that Mr Galloway’s heart does not truly lie in the direction of being a Parliamentary representative.
The latest news that all five of the local authority councillors in Bradford who stood under the banner of Mr Galloway’s Respect party have absconded from his colours and are now standing as independents will only add to the perception of a politician whose local links are becoming increasingly strained.
It may not come as a surprise, therefore, to find that some people are calling on Mr Galloway to stand down from his position as a Bradford MP. Should his ambitions truly be focused on becoming London Mayor, and if he really does find Parliament somewhat tedious, then he might not be blamed at all for stepping aside, forcing a by-election and allowing someone else to have a crack at representing Bradford West.
Should he decide to carry on, though, the future of who represents this seat in Parliament will ultimately lie with the electorate of Bradford West, who will decide with their votes at the next General Election whether they are satisfied with Mr Galloway’s performance to date or if they would like to see a change in their representation.
