SIR – Whose side are the unions really on? It seems like a one-day strike saves a company a fortune on wages, pension contributions and running costs, while the workers lose a day’s pay (and pension) and have to work twice as hard the next day to deal with the backlog! Let’s change tactics and have others hold protests on the workers’ behalf – also let’s boycott the company’s goods and services.
Pensioners (including those in early/forced retirement) enjoyed relatively good working conditions, the result of previous unionists who fought hard for better pay, better hours and better pensions. It’s our turn to help others.
Every unemployed person – you will have to accept continuously-eroding work conditions. Actively stop this happening.
Every homemaker – support those who are supporting you. Remember, you might need to re-enter the jobs market.
Every school-leaver and college student – you will be entering a jobs market that will only get worse without effective action.
Let’s not leave the workers to get scammed into using the current strike ‘tactics’ – they lose all ways. This is everyone’s battle!
