SIR – The Westfield scheme appears to have made some progress (‘Half of Broadway let’, T&A, October 4). Perhaps our councillors will have learned to always have a firm date on any future contracts.
An important issue now is that the planning department includes a condition to allow a clear corridor for a future “cross rail link” giving local and national benefits.
Thousands of people have requested this, starting in 1844 when the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway came steaming into Bradford Interchange, intending to link with the Midland Rail to the west. Unfortunately they had a bitter fall out.
Later the then unpaid councillors, mainly mill owners, tried to reconcile the problem and agreed to finance it in the 1890s, then positively in 1911.
In 1913 a start was made to build stone viaducts, but unfortunately stopped due to the great war of 1914.
This must be the longest campaign ever. This is a very important issue with so much to gain!
