SIR – Your regular contributor, David Rhodes, was unnecessarily sarcastic in his response (Letters, May 16) to my earlier observations about that bridge in Manchester Road.

Mr Rhodes can trot out all the information he likes, but it does not alter the fact that the bridge is massively under-used. Perhaps just one of the reasons is that the bridge is 200 yards long whereas Manchester Road is about the width of a cricket pitch ie 22 yards – just a thought!

This white elephant now stands as a grotesque monument to the inefficiency and stupidity of already discredited councillors and officers.

If Mr Rhodes believes that £4.5 million has been well spent I can only conclude that not all the lunatics have yet made it into the asylum.
