SIR – I was saddened to read of the sudden death of Rashid Awan, a former City of Bradford police officer, who made a massive contribution to improving community relations in this city.
Let us not forget what a remarkable event it was in the 1960s to see an Asian guy in police uniform on the streets of Bradford, or indeed anywhere else in the country in that era. This was a time of overt racial prejudice and BNP demonstrations against immigration.
Not only did Rashid encounter hostility from sections of the white community, but suspicion and alienation from sections of his own community. He was, however, a consummate professional. Patrolling the streets of Bradford he adopted a ‘no-nonsense’ approach and dealt firmly and consistently with lawbreakers from whatever ethic group they came from. His sense of humour and commitment quickly overcame any reservations his colleagues may have had and he became a popular and respected colleague.
Rashid’s positive approach and example helped change attitudes, not only in the police but in the community at large.
The City of Bradford Police were proud to have Rashid among its ranks and he will be sadly missed.
