SIR – It is not often that one reads such a one-sided negative article (Helen Mead, “Gardening is no bed of roses”, May 13), though it was the author’s point of view, on a subject.
Whereas I can appreciate gardening is not for everyone, with a little effort it can provide positive rewards far outweighing the perceived effort required.
A well-kept garden can provide an area for relaxation as well as the exercise in creating it. You can grow your own flowers, vegetables and fruit. In addition, it provides a haven for wildlife and a place of enjoyment and education for children. Who didn’t grow a sunflower from seed as a child?
It can also increase the kerb appeal/ value of your property. With summer on its way, I hope Helen will be a bit more positive, see that gardening programmes are there to inspire, and just spend the odd half-hour that I do in creating something.
