SIR – The suggestion of Central Government that Bradford MDC should join Leeds, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield in forming a super-council (T&A, May 11) to administer some services at a regional level, has had me pondering over a new name for the proposed conglomerate.

How does “West Riding County Council” sound and could its base not be at Wakefield?

Bradford MDC should be obliged to complete its responsibility devolution to the districts’ Parish and Town councils which could be suitably re-named as “Urban and Rural District or Borough Councils”, with their own revenue generating powers and representation on the super-council.

The responsibilities and finance source of the outfit currently bungling along in City Hall, Jacob’s Well, Britannia House, Future House, Olicana House, et al, would then be restricted to within the original – and still valid – city boundaries.

Let the people of Bradford foot the bill for the current ideas on regeneration.

If this pre-1974 scenario were to come to fruition, how long, I wonder, would it be before the city is begging-bowl in hand again and the surrounding districts are developing in harmony and remaining solvent?
