SIR – I do not currently drive, but travel on the roads of Bradford. The quality is getting worse, due to the bad winter we have had. The potholes are bigger, deeper and there are more of them. I appreciate it is a very expensive process, and I have come up with an idea that could generate more income.

My idea is that we should take the police off the roads, with the exception of finding and stopping criminals, and take the duty off them for car offences.

It would be done by creating mobile traffic wardens being able to pull motorists over for using mobile phones, speeding, no MOT, insurance, tax etc. On-the-spot fines would generate more cash.

The idea is if there were more mobile traffic wardens, paid a lot less than a police officer, more people would get caught for speeding, using mobile phones etc, and this would generate more income.

As people were caught repeatably, this would act as a deterrent, and would make them drive more slowly, or not use their mobile phones.

You save money paying less wages, police can concentrate on catching criminals, instead of wasting time on traffic problems. It will generate more funds, to pay for road repairs, and drivers will slow down more.
