SIR – Regarding your item about the assault of a train conductor who had requested a passenger to remove his feet from a seat (T&A, May 10), I would like to point that is a continual problem on the services in this area owing to the seating formation and lack of respect by some passengers.
I have contacted Northern Rail and Metro on a couple of occasions asking them to get the conductors to make a live announcement on the trains instructing the passengers not to put their feet on the seats.
I also suggested that they might like to consider putting small notices on the windows stating the same request, a bit like the old ‘No smoking’ signs which used to be displayed.
