SIR – The Register Office is one of eight buildings the Council could sell in a bid to avoid a multi-million pound maintenance bill (T&A, April 30). The move could see the office put within City Hall. It has also been suggested Silsden Library be sold and moved into the town hall.
Forgive me, good people of Silsden, but why is there a town hall there to begin with? I was to understand all matters were dealt with at City Hall. There is another disused building in the village they want to get shut of, along with two buildings in Shipley and part of its Wakefield Road highways depot. If this is closed, where will the (very small) fleet of snow ploughs go?
It also says the last remaining floor of Britannia House could be refurbished. What for? Who is going to use this floor?
The Register Office has seen thousands of marriages over the years, the building is there for that purpose. Leave it alone and close City Hall as no-one works in there and there are many unused rooms. Besides, who wants to get married in there?
Turn it into a museum as that is all it’s fit for. Leave all the buildings alone. Stop upsetting folk.
