SIR – Graham Hoyle, probably deliberately, totally misrepresents the purpose of ISAs (Letters, May 1). He says he regards them as a method of tax avoidance, which is quite a specious argument.
ISAs were designed to encourage people to save, which used to be encouraged in our economy. As an inducement, a limited amount was exempt from tax, the allowance changes year on year. This is all open and above board and bears no relation to the aggressive tax avoidance that individuals and organisations are deliberately engaged in these days, apparently with the connivance of the Government. They prefer to target skivers, when the real public enemy are the tax dodgers, many of whom donate to the Conservative Party.
