SIR – Regarding David R Turner’s letter (T&A, April 18), I fully agree with everything he says.
Regardless of whether Bingley needs a supermarket or not, what guarantees or security was requested by Bradford Council?
Or is this going to go the same way as Westfield’s hole in the ground? Why does the Council not insist on guarantees, penalty clauses or similar?
The Council appears to be powerless and are just allowing themselves to be walked over. All the teeth they once had are now nowhere to be seen.
We have another hole in the ground at Odsal where the old police station was demolished and has laid idle since. Why doesn’t the chief executive ensure that penalty clauses are written into the contracts, especially when planning consent is given?
