SIR – David Cameron’s blustering rhetoric in support of Trident renewal once again shows how the Coalition Government refuses to apply the most basic of logic to its future spending decisions. He is not only on the wrong side of public opinion, but also on the wrong side of logical thinking.
Britain has not been at threat of a sustained nuclear attack since the end of the Cold War in 1991.
For the PM to suggest that North Korea is in some way threatening Britain with nuclear attack, when the reality is that they are threatening the US, is duplicitous and seeks to use the unease between North Korea and the US in order to inaccurately frame a domestic debate.
Our future defence priorities aside from unilateral nuclear disarmament should instead focus on combating and preventing the real and present threats that stalk our country, namely home grown terrorism and cyber attacks.
