SIR – Your sensationalist Saturday lead that the Passport to Leisure scheme is facing the axe was entirely misleading. Nothing could be further from the truth.
It is our desire to bring the operation of the scheme into the modern age for all of the reasons set out in your comment piece and more besides. We want to increase take-up and build-up the benefits of being a member, not curtail them.
As is pointed out, the current scheme’s shortcomings are many. It is outdated – a paper-based system in a digital age – and was allowed to languish that way through ten years of the previous administration.
The report for the committee is about starting a reasoned discussion on how best to modernise and expand Bradford’s scheme. Your report missed the point.
Coun Andrew Thornton, Executive Member for Environment, Sport & Sustainability, City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, City Hall, Bradford
Editor’s note: Axing the scheme is one of three options outlined in the report to go before councillors, which seems to contradict Coun Thornton’s argument that there is no possibility of the scheme finishing. You can read the report in full by following the link from the original story here.
